The challenges we experience as our culture moves through warp speed changes affect our ability to learn, to heal, and to engage with each other. Reaching across social gaps and personal barriers in order to see another enough to heal antipathy, confusion, and judgment can feel daunting. The originator of Sociodrama, J.L. Moreno, provides a path to connection, withdrawing past paradigms and arriving at the Here and Now. Through active strategies, this approach encourages trust and brings clarity to a current situation and the roles within it. The desired result is an increase in empathy and a stronger sense of community.
OBJECTIVES
- Participants will understand the nature of Sociodrama, a group action method in which an agreed upon social situation is acted out spontaneously
- Group members will explore Role Method through expanded taxonomies (classifications of roles we play) based on Robert Landy’s original work
- Participants will experience complementary role-taking approaches; Virginia Satir’s personality styles and Marshall Rosenberg’s jackal/giraffe conflict responses to deepen their enactments
- The participants will experience the importance of warm-ups as one of the essential components of sociodrama
- After the warm-ups, the second–the enactment component–will be demonstrated as participants play roles to depict viewpoints in a current situation, offering a clear picture of how roles influence perceptions
- Participants will engage in the third sociodrama component, the sharing, as they review the ways in which views are expressed in the roles they played.
