Whether we identify as trans, non-binary, cisgender, or fall somewhere else on the gender spectrum, we all navigate gender through the social scripts we’ve been given throughout our lives. In this workshop, we’ll explore how our experiences with gender might change if we challenge and expand the narratives we’ve been taught. Through art, writing, and discussion, we’ll examine our work with gender-diverse clients, reflecting on our own positionality to enhance and broaden the support we offer. By doing so, we can develop more inclusive and effective interventions for those we serve.

This workshop is aimed at providing a space for clinicians to traverse beyond the gender binary to support their clients who are trans, nonbinary, and exploring.  It will give you creative tools to use in your work with gender diverse clients. This workshop meets the criteria for multicultural competency continuing education credits.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Discuss what folks already know about trans and nonbinary experiences. The objective is for clinicians to learn from each other and workshop leaders about gender expansiveness. Additionally, attendees will become familiar with expressive arts if not already aware.
  • Explore external views of gender. The objective is for clinicians to use art to examine the messaging they have received about gender from external sources. This will help clinicians see what pressures their clients face in regard to gender.
  • Discover internal views of gender. The objective is for clinicians to use art to explore gender internally. This will help clinicians think about their clients who have done this work and support them in their continued internal work.
  • Discussion to synthesize learning. The objective is for clinicians to talk about what they learned. Our hope is that, after this workshop, clinicians will be more equipped to support their gender diverse clients.

Cancellation Policy: We require cancellation notification at least 2 weeks prior to the workshop date in order to use your registration fee towards a future workshop. No refunds will be given. read more…
