Research has shown the Expressive Arts to be an effective coping mechanism when managing chronic pain. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been shown to be an effective approach to managing chronic pain, as well. This workshop focuses on an approach to increase psychological flexibility through teaching emotional, cognitive, and social interventions through the use of a variety of expressive arts.

Participants will learn how to:

  1. Use mindfulness practices through guided imagery and mediation activities to address chronic pain
  2. Assist clients to identify personal values through completion of an expressive arts activity
  3. Use expressive arts to help clients examine and identify unhelpful thoughts
  4. Teach clients how to explore the observing self and gain self-awareness through expressive arts modalities.
  5. Identify how clients can define their Polarities of Pain
  6. Use drama and writing to help client commitment to action
