This hands-on workshop offers the participant some simple, yet powerful, expressive arts tools for your youth to adult age clients. After attending this workshop, participants will be able to use suggested materials and activities with confidence. The Expressive Arts can be used to enhance your existing skills, whether action-oriented or process-oriented.

Expressive Arts Therapy utilizes a multi-arts approach that focuses on the creative process and art-making, combining the visual arts, movement, drama, music, and writing to foster deep personal growth and community development. This workshop will focus on visual arts and writing.

The tools presented in this workshop are designed so that even with limited resources and space, a clinician can have a variety options. No experience in the arts is necessary. All materials provided for in-studio workshops.

Learning objectives

  1. Participants will take away introductory knowledge of Expressive Arts Therapy, including how expressive arts therapy is defined, the general philosophy and approach.
  2. Participants will learn how to use some basic art materials, and how to choose appropriate materials.
  3. Hands-on experiential learning will offer participants immediate working knowledge of simple expressive arts activities that they can use with their clients right away.
  4. Participants will learn several therapeutic visual arts techniques using various media, such as drawing and collage.
  5. Participants will learn several therapeutic writing techniques such as journal writing, using poetry, and visual journaling.
  6. Participants will enhance clinical skills by learning how and when to use expressive arts activities appropriately and ethically, with their clients.

Required Materials

  • Basic drawing materials that include some colors—have at least two different options:
    • Markers, crayons, color pencils, oil or chalk pastels, etc.
  • Paper for drawing: heavier weight is preferred, but copy paper is okay.
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Images from any printed materials: magazines, old calendar, catalog, etc.
  • Here are examples from our Blick List – you do not need to purchase these exact items unless you would like to, you can use what you have on hand.

Earning Continuing Education Credits

To receive a CE Certificate for completion of this workshop, you must officially register, attend the workshop in its entirety and complete an evaluation form after the workshop. The evaluation form is emailed to you by the following Friday of the workshop. After completing & submitting the evaluation form, a CE Certificate will be emailed to you within 5-7 business days.

Who is eligible to receive CEs?

  • Nationally: Approved NBCC Provider for Mental Health Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Licensed Social Workers (you are responsible for confirming that your organization/state will accept NBCC credits.)
  • New York Licensed Creative Arts Therapists (LCATs)
  • Washington State School Counselor/Teacher (OSPI) Approved by the Washington State Office of Public Instruction as a “Washington State approved clock hour offering workshop.”
  • If you are outside of Washington State, we advise that you check with your state licensing board to confirm that they accept NBCC Approved CEs.
