Learning Objectives:

Identify: Participants will find in Jungian theory the “center of awareness” and be able to express their lived experience found in somatic cues

Explore: The group members will share their own “hero’s journey” starting with what physician and therapist Russ Harris calls “myth of self-belief” through the extraction of the “exceptional narrative” found in Narrative Therapy (White/Epson) practices.

Discover courage: Group participants will find in Virginia Satir’s change model the transformative processes that lead to the courage to act. That action can transform, and “brave” is the result.

Choosing Options: Joseph Campbell’s original hero’s journey starts with the call. Participants discuss stepping into the call – the beginning of the journey.

Respond to Options: As the journey progresses, participants explore the nature of starting over – experiencing challenges and temptations, as Maureen Murdock called them and being willing to start over; to return to the call.

Share: Participants will share their stories, examining the Natalie Rogers model for community-building: collaborating and sharing for healing and social change.

Utilizing the Holistic Trauma Healing Card Deck, a unique and empowering resource, participants will learn how to integrate expressive arts therapy into their practice to promote holistic healing and resilience in the face of trauma.
Through a combination of presentations, discussions, and experiential exercises, participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to facilitate trauma-informed care through holistic expressive arts practices.
Specifically, participants will learn how to use expressive arts tools such as: Creative writing and journaling to process traumatic experiences Visual art-making to express and manage emotions Mindfulness and meditation to reduce stress and anxiety Movement and dance to release tension and promote embodiment Music and sound to create a sense of safety and calm These expressive arts tools will enable participants to support clients in accessing and processing traumatic memories, managing emotions and behaviors, and fostering resilience and post-traumatic growth.

The creation and use of dolls in Expressive Arts Therapy offers rich healing prospects. The opportunity to create a doll form offers a mindful process that can help to externalize feelings and experiences. Therapeutic applications including processing grief, reviewing childhood experiences, identity construction, attachment issues, and complex trauma, to name a few. Bringing the doll into form or “being” is a creative process that brings together so much of what is available in the expressive arts approach: the visual and tactile; working with metaphor and symbolism; play, storytelling, and enactment.

In this workshop participants will engage in a simple, hands-on process and learn to turn a few basic supplies into soft sculpture doll creations.
