The current pandemic has taken a significant toll on the mental health of many. It may just be that anxiety is the natural response to challenges of our day. While it is understandable how we got here, managing that anxiety is necessary for mental, physical, and emotional wellness. Mental health clinicians are on the front lines of addressing these challenges.  This workshop will look at the impact of anxiety on our lives, with challenges that range from general stress and anxiety to panic attacks. We will highlight and explore the role music can play in addressing some of these challenges.

Music is accessible to everyone, from the basic use of the voice in singing to listening to recorded music via a variety of devices. Music can be expressive, soothing, or energizing in adapting to specific needs of an individual or group. We will draw from various music-related practices, including music therapy, music theory, and musicking. We will highlight current research in how music affects the body, brain, and emotional well-being.

The workshop will draw on the presenter’s more than 35 years of experience working as a music therapist and social worker, from private practice to various medical settings to community-based settings. It will also draw upon her many years as a musical performer, recording artist, and community musician. Some of the experiential exercises will include listening to music, improvisation, singing, and instrument playing. The format for the workshop will include didactic and experiential learning.
