This workshop will offer professionals Expressive Arts Therapy techniques targeted for an adolescent population. We will focus on strategies for providing a creative process for self-reflection, personal processing, communication, and esteem building with adolescents, by highlighting three expressive arts modalities.
The theory of each modality and how it may benefit the adolescent population will be reviewed and the application of these modalities through an expressive arts lens will be discussed with case-study examples. Additional resources relating to these modalities and expressive arts techniques will be provided as well.
This is an interactive training where all professionals will be encouraged to participate in the creation of the prompts and group processing. Please be prepared to engage with other professionals and have some basic art supplies readily available during this training.
Suggested supplies to choose from:
Drawing materials such as markers, crayons, colored pencils, pens, paper, charcoal, oil, or chalk pastels. Paper such as mixed media, construction, cardboard, blank masks (can be formed with paper), scissors. Please also have writing paper and implement.
In addition, for the music modality portion of this training, please be prepared to have a selected song with lyrics before the class. Participation including having cameras on will be mandatory for eligibility with CE/Clock Hours. The presenter will provide additional prompts that will not be reviewed during the training as resources.
Learning Objectives
- Exploring what it is like to be an adolescent from a developmental and environmental perspective. Physiology of developing brain and statistics relating to adolescent mental health will be reviewed.
- Writing- Theory and practice of using writing. Writing is a useful tool for adolescents. Two directives will be reviewed including writing and poetry.
- Music- Theory and practice of music as a connector. How music can improve connection and help adolescents express themselves. One prompt will be reviewed.
- Visual Arts- Theory and practice of how the creation of art may provide a tool for adolescents to express themselves. One prompt will be reviewed.
